Periodontal disease occurs when bacteria accumulate along the gum line, forming plaque. Over time, these bacteria can penetrate between the tooth and gum, reaching the bone that supports the teeth. In response, the body recognizes the bacteria and their byproducts as harmful and initiates a protective reaction. This defense mechanism involves the body attempting to pull the bone away from the irritant. While this response is intended to protect against infection, it also leads to bone loss around the teeth.
