How Can I Prevent Gum Disease?

In this video, Dr. Matthew Keider explains the importance of proper oral hygiene and regular dental visits in preventing periodontal disease. If you want to improve your gum health and prevent future issues, schedule a free consultation today to develop a personalized care plan.

The best way to prevent periodontal disease is through good oral hygiene at home. The second most important step is to visit your dentist regularly for professional cleanings and checkups.

For effective home care, flossing is essential—even though many people dislike it. The best time to floss is before bed, but that is often when people are most tired and least likely to do it. To make flossing easier and more convenient, I recommend using small flossers, such as the Plackers brand. Keeping a bag in your car, by your sofa, or in other easily accessible locations can help you incorporate flossing into your daily routine. The goal is to floss once every 24 hours, regardless of the time of day. Flossing at any time is better than not flossing at all, as it disrupts bacteria buildup and cleans the areas beneath the gum line.

If flossing before bed is difficult, try fitting it into your routine at a more convenient time, such as during your commute or while watching TV. Making flossing a habit rather than a chore will significantly improve your oral health.

In addition to home care, seeing your dentist regularly is crucial for preventing periodontal disease. Routine cleanings every six months are typically recommended, but some patients may need more frequent visits depending on their individual oral health. Professional cleanings allow your dentist to remove plaque and tartar buildup below the gum line, helping to prevent gum disease before it progresses.

By combining consistent home care with regular dental visits, you can significantly reduce your risk of developing periodontal disease and maintain healthy gums and teeth for years to come.
