There are many different manufacturers of dental implants, and you may hear about various types. In general, implants fall into two main categories: traditional implants, which are larger in diameter, and mini dental implants, which are smaller. The choice of implant depends on each patient’s individual needs, as implant placement must be tailored to the available bone structure.
For an implant to be successful, it must be placed in bone that can adequately support it. Similar to inserting a screw into a board, the board must be wide and thick enough to hold the screw securely. If the bone in the jaw is too narrow or thin, a traditional implant may not be feasible without additional procedures such as bone grafting. Bone grafting involves adding bone material to strengthen the area, but it requires additional healing time and increases treatment costs.
Mini dental implants provide an alternative in cases where there is insufficient bone for a traditional implant. Because they have a smaller diameter, they can be placed in thinner areas of bone without the need for grafting. This makes the procedure quicker, less invasive, and often more cost-effective.
Since every patient’s situation is unique, the best type of implant depends on factors such as bone volume and treatment goals. I would be happy to assess your case and discuss whether a traditional implant or a mini implant would be the most suitable option for you.
