I have had many patients under the assumption that the Affordable Care Act covers their child’s dental care (or at least part of it) up to age 18 if they sign up for government insurance.
The truth of the matter is that because the plan is a basic “health plan,” the dental coverage for kids has the same yearly deductible that must be met that health has before there is any dental coverage. For many, the deductible is very high, at around $11,000 / year.
This makes it nearly impossible for children to get coverage for dental care under this type of insurance. Many reasonably priced individual dental insurance plans are still available from reputable insurance companies. It is worth taking a look.
